How to Cancel vehicle registration  and Return or Keep Your Plates in SA

To cancel vehicle registration in South Australia, complete the MR3 form. This is the Application to Cancel Registration.

You can lodge it online through EzyReg or your mySA GOV account. You can also lodge it in person at a Service SA centre. If you cannot attend in person, you can post the form and number plates to Service SA.

Once the plates are surrendered and the registration is cancelled, you may claim a pro-rata refund. This can apply to unused registration fees and Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. A cancellation fee is deducted before the refund is issued.

This guide covers the full cancellation process, what happens to standard and personalised plates, the refund process, and the important timing decisions that SA car owners face when selling or disposing of a vehicle.

What Cancelling Registration in SA Actually Means

Cancelling registration is a formal request to the SA Government to remove a vehicle from the road. It terminates the registration, releases the CTP insurance, and ends the registered owner’s ongoing fee obligation.

It is different from letting registration lapse. A lapsed registration means the expiry date has passed without renewal — the vehicle is unregistered, but it has not been formally cancelled. Voluntary cancellation is a deliberate step that confirms the vehicle will no longer be used on public roads.

The key distinction matters for liability. A lapsed registration leaves the vehicle in a grey administrative state. A cancelled registration creates a clear, documented record that the vehicle has been taken off the road — which protects the previous owner from future liability claims.

How to Cancel Vehicle Registration in SA — Step by Step

There are 3 ways to cancel vehicle registration in South Australia.

Option 1: Online via EzyReg or mySA GOV

Log in to your EzyReg account or your mySA GOV account.  Navigate to the vehicle registration cancellation option.

Enter the required vehicle and owner details.  Submit the cancellation request.

Post your number plates to Service SA if you cannot surrender them in person.

Online cancellation is the fastest method. The plates must still be surrendered — either by post or at a Service SA centre.

Option 2: In Person at Service SA

Download the MR3 form (Application to Cancel Registration) from the SA Government website, or collect one at any Service SA customer service centre.  Complete the form with your details: name, address, phone number, vehicle make and model, engine number, and licence plate number.  Attach any required supporting documentation based on your reason for cancellation.Hand in the completed form and your number plates at the Service SA centre.

 Option 3: By Post

Complete the MR3 form.  Attach your supporting documents.  Post the completed form and your number plates to Service SA.

Postal cancellation is available for car owners who cannot attend a Service SA centre in person. Allow extra time for processing.

 Documents Required at Cancellation

The documentation required depends on the reason for cancellation. The standard cancellation requires the completed MR3 form and the number plates. Additional documents are required in 3 specific situations.

Cancellation Reason

Required Documentation

Vehicle written off or wrecked

A letter from your insurer confirming the write-off, or a completed Statutory Declaration on the back of the MR3 form.

Vehicle registered interstate

Your new interstate registration certificate and a plate surrender receipt from the other state.

Vehicle stolen

A police report number obtained by calling the police assistance line (131 444). Important: 30 days must pass from the date of theft before the registration can be cancelled.

What Happens to Your Number Plates

Number plates belong to the registered owner, not the vehicle. This distinction is important when selling a car, and especially when handing a car to a wrecking yard.

Standard Plates

Standard SA number plates must be surrendered to Service SA as part of the cancellation process. They cannot be transferred to another vehicle. When selling to a wrecker, remove the plates before the car is collected — surrendering them separately gives you the plate surrender receipt needed to complete the cancellation and claim any refund.

 Personalised Plates

Personalised plates are treated differently. Because they have independent value and belong to the owner, they can be transferred to another vehicle rather than surrendered when a car is disposed of.

To keep personalised plates when selling or wrecking a car, complete the plate transfer process through Service SA before the vehicle is collected. If the vehicle is handed over with personalised plates still attached, and no transfer has been completed, recovering them becomes significantly more complicated.

Important for wrecker sales:

Remove personalised plates before the vehicle is collected by the wrecking yard. Once the car leaves your property with plates attached, you will need to contact the wrecker and Service SA to resolve the situation. Complete the transfer first — it takes only a short visit to a Service SA centre.

Can You Get a Refund When You Cancel Registration?

Yes. Cancelling registration in SA entitles you to claim a pro-rata refund on the unused portion of your registration fees and your CTP insurance premium.

The refund covers the remaining period of the registration and CTP that has already been paid but not yet used. A cancellation fee is deducted from the total before the refund is calculated. The refund is issued by cheque and sent to the registered owner’s address.

  things determine the refund amount:

The number of unused days or months remaining on the registration period      The unused portion of the CTP insurance premium The applicable cancellation fee deducted by Service SA

Note:

Service SA determines refund amounts based on the current registration and CTP schedules. Do not rely on informal estimates. The exact refund is calculated at the time of cancellation.

Refunds are not issued immediately. Allow time for processing after the plates are surrendered and the cancellation is confirmed.

When Should You Cancel — Before or After the Wrecker Collects the Car?

Cancel registration at the time of collection or shortly after — not before, if you still need to drive the car to the collection point.

Driving an unregistered vehicle on a public road in South Australia is an offence. If you cancel registration before the wrecker arrives and you need to move the car, you will need to either arrange towing or obtain an unregistered vehicle permit for the journey.

The practical sequence most SA car owners follow when selling to a wrecker is:  Remove personalised plates before collection day, if applicable.

Confirm the collection time with the wrecker.  Remove standard plates on the day of collection, or hand them over if agreed.  Cancel registration at Service SA on collection day or immediately after.

Lodge the Notice of Disposal through mySA GOV if the car was sold.

The wrecker does not automatically cancel registration on your behalf. That responsibility stays with the registered owner until formal cancellation is completed.

Notice of Disposal — Is It the Same as Cancelling Registration?

No. Cancelling registration and lodging a Notice of Disposal are two separate steps with separate purposes.

Cancel Registration

Notice of Disposal (NOD)

Purpose

Takes the vehicle off the road. Ends the rego and CTP. Releases the owner from ongoing fees.

Notifies the SA Government that ownership or responsibility for the vehicle has transferred to another party.

When needed

When the vehicle will no longer be driven on public roads.

When the vehicle has been sold, donated, or transferred — including to a wrecker.

How to complete

MR3 form via EzyReg, mySA GOV, in person, or by post.

Online via mySA GOV account.

Plates

Plates must be surrendered or transferred.

Plates are not part of the NOD process.

When selling a car to a wrecking yard in South Australia, most owners need to complete both steps. Cancel the registration to formally take the vehicle off the road and reclaim unused fees. Lodge the Notice of Disposal to notify the government that the vehicle has changed hands.

For full guidance on the NOD process, see Notice of Disposal in SA.

What Happens If You Don’t Cancel Registration After Disposing of the Car?

If the vehicle remains registered in your name after it has been sold or disposed of, the registered owner can still be held responsible for traffic offences, tolls, or incidents involving that vehicle.

The registration system records the current registered owner. If a fine, toll notice, or enforcement action is generated against the vehicle, it will be directed to the name on the registration — regardless of who physically has the car.

This is why cancelling registration and lodging the Notice of Disposal matter. Together, they create a clear documented record that the vehicle is no longer your responsibility. Neither step is complicated — but skipping both leaves you exposed to administrative headaches that can take time to resolve.

Practical note:

If you have already sold or handed over the car and have not yet cancelled registration, do this promptly. Service SA allows cancellation after the vehicle has been disposed of — you do not need the car present at the centre.
